Poppy Seed Swirls

2015-02-04 15.01.07_resizedLove Poppy Seeds but for some reason rarely use them other than Christmas Baking but did today and loving the results.  These rolls were easy to make.  Made 24 rolls but know next time I will double the batch and freeze for lunchs or great with Sunday Brunch. My apologies for not having more pictures as just got busy enjoying the baking and some how forgot till I was done:-)

Accessories: KoMo Mill for fresh ground flour and the Roller Scraper attachment
Quantity: 24  Buns
Preheat oven to 400 degrees

Ingredients for Buns

  • 1 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp. instant yeast
  • 4 1/4 cups flour

Ingredients for Filling:

  • 1 cup poppy seeds
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • juice of 1/2 lemon
  • 1 egg (beaten)

Frosting Ingredients:

  • 2 tbsp. coconut oil
  • 1 tbsp. water
  • 1 1/2 cup icing sugar

Warm milk and butter till butter melts, cool slightly till warm to touch.  Add to stainless bowl and add the sugar and cinnamon to this.   Add about 1/3 of the flour and the yeast.  Blend well and add remaining flour. Mix on low speed.  Once well blended increase speed to about 3 o’clock on your dial and set for 6 minutes.   Dough should be nice and smooth form into a ball and cover till double (approx. 30 min.)

During this time in small saucepan add the filling ingredients.  Place over medium heat and stirring constantly bring to a low boil till it thickens.  Will take about 10 minutes but continue to stir as will burn easy.  Once thick remove from heat and cool to room temperature.

Take the dough once risen and roll on lightly floured surface into a rectangle about 1/3 – 1/2 inch thick.   Spread filling over and rollup lengthwise.   With a serrated(bread)  knife slice into 1/2 thick slices and place a couple inches apart on cookie sheets.   Bake in 400 degree oven for about 13 – 15 minutes or till golden brown.   Cool on racks and frost lightly.

Mix the frosting ingredients together, the coconut oil may want to separate if too warm.   If this happens just refrigerate for a bit.  Spread thinly over cooled Swirls.  Enjoy fresh or freeze and reheat in microwave before serving.
