Valentine Cookies and Sweets

Ordering flowers and/or dinner is great but we have to admit its easy too do.  So why not take the time to show you care by tying on an apron and whipping up a batch of homemade cookies for those you love. For those with a sweet tooth I made the little gumdrop candies you see here as well, they are quick, easy and with a small heart cutter would have been a Valentine treat all alone.  The recipe is below as well.

Accessories: Stainless bowl with roller and scraper
Quantity:  3 dozen large hearts
Oven Temp: 375 degrees

Cookie Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup softened Butter
  • 1/2 cup White Sugar
  • 1/2 cup Brown Sugar
  • 1 Egg
  • 1/2 cup Milk
  • 1 Tsp. Vanilla
  • 3 1/2 cups Flour ( I used white for this recipe)
  • 2 tsp. Cream of Tartar
  • 1 tsp. Baking Soda
  • 1/2 tsp. Salt

20140211_145944_resizedCream butter and sugars together.  Add egg, milk and vanilla.  Beat until fluffy.  Mix together in large measuring up or bowl the dry ingredients and stir together a bit.  Slowly add to the moist ingredients and mix well.  If your dough seems to soft you may want to add a bit more flour to make it easy to roll.   Place covered bowl in fridge for about an hour. This makes the dough nicer to roll.  Roll to 1/4 inch thick and cut into hearts or your desired shapes.  Bake for 8 – 10 minutes till done, do not over bake.  Cool.

I made a simple thin glaze for these out of Icing sugar, Milk and Coconut Oil instead of butter this gave a great flavor and keeps the frosting white.  I just lightly spread this over each cookie then dipped  the tops into a mixture of 1 cup of sugar and 1 tsp. of strawberry Jello powder that I had mixed together. I added just a drop of water to the sugar and then rubbed it all together to get color to blend.

Enjoy and wishing you a Wonderful Valentines Day……

For the Gum Drops …. warning these are extremely sweet.

  • 1 cups Sugar
  • 1 envelopes unflavored Gelatin,
  • 1 small box Jello Powder
  • 2/3 cup Applesauce
  • 1/2 tsp. Lemon Juice

Mix together in sauce pan and let stand for 1 minute.  Bring to a boil and stirring constantly for 2 minutes. Remove from heat and pour into greased 8 x 8 pan. Refridgerate for 3 hrs. Run spatula around edge of pan and turnonto cutting board, I ran warm water over bottom of pan for about 15 seconds and this helped to release gumdrop. Cut into shapes or small squares.  Roll in sugar. Let sit till dry.  These are really gooey to handle.
